Abstract

This study aims to analyze the image of the city in Italo Calvino's novels "Marcovaldo" and "The Invisible Cities," examining how his ecological awareness manifests in the works and analyzing the urban images that emerge from them. Furthermore, it seeks to explore the message these works convey to contemporary society, where human survival is threatened by environmental crisis and ecosystem destruction. "Marcovaldo" and "The Invisible Cities" describe the city in different ways and observe urban life from unique perspectives. The city is not merely a narrative backdrop, but is treated as a vital and active world that interacts with itself and nature, co-created with human beings. In other words, in both works the city is viewed as an interconnection between nature and culture, between human and non-human, a space where different subjects coexist. Therefore, through these two works, this study intends to analyze Calvino's ecological awareness, which rejects the dichotomous attitude between humans and nature and advocates coexistence, sensing the risk that environmental destruction could transform cities into uninhabitable places for humans.
