Abstract
This study analyzes Carlo Levi's (1902-1975) novels "Christ Stopped at Eboli "(1945) and "The Reason of Rats "(2004) from an ecocritical perspective. Christ Stopped at Eboli is a work that records Levi's experiences during his exile to the Lucania region in southern Italy under the Fascist regime, illuminating the lives of southern peasants and their unique traditions and myths, while focusing on the relationships among humans, nature, and animals. "The Reason of Rats" is a collection of writings published between 1957 and 1962, dealing with stories of animals coexisting with humans. In Levi's works, animals occupy a central thematic position, either representing the marginalized peasant world or indicating the fundamental state of existence. Levi demonstrates an ecological awareness that there are no boundaries between animals and humans, or between nature and humans, and that they interact with one another. Already by the mid-20th century, he recognized the alienation and destruction of nature caused by technological civilization, and understood humans and nature not as binary opposites but as interconnected beings. By bringing the animal world into the human world, he overcomes anthropocentrism, reminds us of forgotten values through the relationship between animals and humans, and lays the foundation for environmental discourse. Since this ecological awareness is particularly prominent in these two works, this study analyzes them from an ecocritical perspective.
