Abstract

This thesis studied consciousness of vagrancy flowing generally in poems of Kim Kwan-sik in a relationship with letting nature be (muwejayeon). The poem world of Kim Kwan-sik is mostly summarized as embodying the life of letting natural be(muwejayeon), a thinking system of the Orient. Therefore, the researcher is to examine consciousness of vagrancy that is often seen in his poems in the extension with letting nature be(muwejayeon). The meaning of vagrancy seen in poems of Kim Kwan-sik is associated with a resistance for the real world and the discovery of a genuine life. Vagrancy in 「Collections of Fallen Blossoms(Nakhwajib)」 and 「A Prayer before Sunset」, collections of poems written in the early years is linked to the meaning of a resistance for the real world and an appetite for life. He expressed downright poverty and a marginal woman’s life in original sin consciousness that cannot be deviated. A poetic narrator’s way to deal with realities is to make headway to a moment of admittance by making chaotic time and space constantly through sexual relations with marginal women (madwoman, prostitute). If chaotic space is a death disrupting cosmic order, it is a death conceiving a new life and a moment entering a new world. This creation of a new world leads to the sense of freedom and liberty of the inner world through communion with nature. Vagrancy to the inner world of the poetic narrator is seen through images of ‘water’ and ‘mountain’. Water and mountain are embodied of the same through flow, and a life of ‘letting nature be(muwejayeon)’ is discovered. Kim Kwan-sik suffering from poverty and disease at a young age faced a death freely in his life. He expressed an unavoidable death as a new start through images of ‘butterfly’ and ‘bird’. Butterfly and bird lead not only to previous life but also present life and post life, so acquire eternity. The poetic narrator acquires eternity through a change of being into winged animals, but it is not recognition of the creation and destruction transcending the process of pain. He reaches eternity by going through the process of thoroughly realistic and humane pain, question, and conflict. This poetic expression gains the sympathy humanly.
