Abstract

This study aims to collect and organize existing academic research focusing on theses and scholarly articles on kugak ch’anyang—Koreanized Protestant church music utilizing Korean traditional music—and to examine its academic significance. For over 140 years since the introduction of Protestantism in Korea, efforts to incorporate traditional Korean music into church music have steadily continued. Since the 1980s, these efforts have developed into active practices and scholarly investigations, particularly in light of changing social perceptions of kugak, or Korean traditional music. The emergence of kugak ch’anyang was further supported by the rise of contextual theologies in Korea such as Tochkhwasinhak (Korean Indigenous Theology) in the 1960s and Minjungsinhak (Minjung Theology) in the 1970s, which provided a theological foundation for expressing the gospel in a Korean context and respecting indigenous culture. This study analyzes 131 theses and scholarly articles collected using keywords such as “kugak ch’anyang,” “indigenization,” “Koreanization,” and “church music,” categorizing them into eight thematic areas. It further argues that kugak ch’anyang goes beyond mere musical practice to serve as a multifaceted site of cultural expression that encompasses Korean identity, cultural contemporaneity, and possibilities for integrative education. Although the number of participants in kugak ch’anyang remains limited and practical challenges persist, the accumulated body of academic work suggests the potential for its broader application in performance and education. It provides a vital foundation for envisioning the future of Korean church music and is expected to be increasingly recognized not only as a form of Korean religious music but also as part of the broader history of Korean music.
