Abstract

Ch'ŏyongmu (處容舞), a significant ritual court dance of Chosŏn dynasty royal banquets, underwent semantic evolution according to different eras. Originating as an apotropaic ritual (辟邪進慶) to ward off evil spirits, it gradually became institutionalized as a formalized rite within royal banquets. Particularly during King Yŏngjo's reign, the practical and political debates surrounding its continuation emerged as a political case, demonstrating how rituals acquire legitimacy and become established within the system of governance. This study aims to reveal that the Ch'ŏyongmu performance controversy during Yŏngjo's reign was not merely an issue of practical inconvenience or financial burden, but rather a process through which the king politically reinterpreted and utilized ritual to strengthen royal authority and secure legitimacy. Chosŏn's state rituals gained legitimacy within a formalized ceremonial framework (ŭijŏn, 儀典) based on Confucian political ideology. Yŏngjo appropriated the 'T'aegang' (太康) verse from the Classic of Poetry (Shih-ching, 詩經) and the 'P'unghyŏng' (豊亨) verse from the Book of Changes (Chou-i, 周易) for Ch'ŏyongmu, imbuing it with a moral message symbolizing diligence and restraint, and integrating it into the ŭijŏn system. By doing so, Yŏngjo enhanced the political function of ritual and effectively ritualized his philosophy of governance. In this process, Ch'ŏyongmu functioned not merely as a performance but as a means of transmitting political messages, and its placement and scale within banquets were strategic decisions by the king to embody his ideals and manage political tensions. In conclusion, the Ch'ŏyongmu controversy during Yŏngjo's reign suggests that traditional rituals are not static but an organic structure where political authority and institutional legitimacy interact, continuously reconfigured and institutionalized according to the king's political interpretation and will.
