On the Social Photography for the Negotiation of National Identity

This paper explores the relationship between the formation of national identity and the alternative social photography in view of the politics of memory, through the analysis of the media practice in American society in and around 2008 and of the cultural practice in S. Korean society in 2013. In these contemporary societies driven by visual culture, the imaginative national identity emerges within the cultural consciousness of the national narrative relating to neo-conservatism, which represents both something original about a nation, reflecting social temporality, and something repetitive from the past. In those doubly structured characteristics of the national narrative, national identity comes into a view as the image of a nation body, symbolized in something visual representing the authority of certain nation-power. This paper will analyze how alternative social photography could negotiate national identity in this performative process each space-time by reviewing the cases of Tim Hetherington and of Lee Jae Gab, and by discourse analysis of cultural memory and visual culture.
