Abstract

Shisei Kuwabara, a distinguished Japanese documentary photographer, engaged in extensive documentation of Korea over a span exceeding five decades, commencing in the 1960s. Despite his notable contributions to the documentation of Korea, scholarly research on his work has been relatively unexplored. This study endeavors to address this gap by conducting a thorough analysis of Kuwabara's documentation strategies. Through the integration of qualitative interviews and the examination of his photographic collections, three salient documentation strategies are identified: documenting Korea from the perspective of the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War, depicting Korea through an ostensibly objective yet inherently Japan-centric perspective, and amplifying subaltern voices within Korean society. This thesis elucidates Kuwabara's unique documentation strategy, underscoring the evidential and informational significance inherent in his documentary photographs. By dissecting these components, the research provides insights into the socio-political contexts underpinning his work and contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the historical and cultural narratives that Kuwabara sought to record and convey through his documentary photographs.
