Abstract
This study focuses on two photographers who captured the complex realities of Korean society in the late 1950s and 1960s from their unique perspectives: the Japanese documentary photographer, Shisei Kuwabara, who documented from an outsider’s perspective the daily lives of those who nestled in the shantytowns built on the embankment of Cheonggyecheon Stream in Seoul during his three-year stay in Korea from 1965 through 1968, and the Korean everyday-realism photographer, Limb Eung-Sik (1912-2001), who documented the social realities of his homeland before and after the Korean War, with a particular focus on the everyday scenes of the streetscape of Myeongdong in the 1950s Seoul. It will examine the subjective as well as distinctive viewpoints of these two photographers as they strived to look into the common realities with which the postwar Korean society had to be confronted, whereby to explore the ways in which the multifaceted and multilayered relationships are formed between a photographer and his or her subject. While recognizing the superficial differences in their perspectives that tend to often emerge out of the apparent preoccupations associated with the two photographers’ respective nationality per se (Japanese and Korean), what this study tries to aim is however to examine and compare their respective anthropological viewpoints transcending the conventional notions of nationality, citizenship, and ethnicity all constructed on the basis of an imagined sense of identity or belonging. By doing so, it seeks to show how Kuwabara and Limb – both as the members of imagined community (other than that in Benedict Anderson’s sense to do with the constructed nature of national identity) of photographers formed out of their professional affiliation – offered via a series of their respective photographs taken on the postwar Korean society nuanced perspectives of their own vis-à-vis its common reality of everyday urban life.
