초록

This study examines Japanese photographer Miki Jun's documentation strategy on his Korean War photographs, focusing on his work for Life magazine. Trained in Hodo Shashin (Japanese reportage photography) closely aligned with Japan's military propaganda in his early career, Miki became Japan’s first Life staff photographer in postwar era, reflecting the adoption of American-style photojournalism following Japan's defeat in World War II. His photographs of Korean War, shaped by Life’s editorial policies and Henry R. Luce’s an American-centric view of worldwide, emphasized themes of heroism and humanitarianism from a distinctly American perspective while lacking an independent and socially critical viewpoint. By situating Miki’s work within Japan’s postwar Americanization, this study explores how his photographs reflect the sociocultural frameworks shaping Japanese perceptions of Korea in the era after Japan’s defeat and Korea’s liberation.
