초록

This study aims to realize a new approach to historical photography through the photographic series “Bitgae”, which explores the Jeju 4.3 Incident. Moving beyond the binary perspective of ideological conflict between the left and right, this work seeks to examine diverse viewpoints and offer audiences opportunities for reinterpretation. Drawing on John Dewey's theory of experience, which emphasizes the interplay between trying and undergoing, this study asserts that art derives meaning from the integration of these two processes. Applied to “Bitgae”, the portrayal of the watchful boy does not merely document or depict the Jeju 4.3 Incident; instead, it facilitates an active and aesthetic engagement, allowing audiences to experience the essence of the historical event anew. This series goes beyond simply presenting images—it invites audiences to actively interpret and emotionally connect with the narrative. The low-angle perspectives reflecting the boy's gaze, the tension captured in landscapes, and the intersection of past and present urge viewers to delve into the inner experience of the historical event.
