초록

Traditional documentary photography has long operated under asymmetrical power dynamics, privileging the photographer's gaze while rendering subjects silent and passive. This research examines the participatory practices of Jim Goldberg as a significant departure from this model, focusing on how his work reconfigures the ethics of representation. Through the juxtaposition of image and subject-authored text in projects such as Rich and Poor, Raised by Wolves, and Coming and Going, Goldberg invites his subjects to become co-narrators of their own stories. Drawing on Roland Barthes’ concepts of anchorage and relay, this study explores how the image-text relationship in Goldberg’s work generates interpretive plurality and emotional resonance. His practice disrupts conventional documentary authority and enables collaborative storytelling, redefining photography as a relational and affective medium. Ultimately, this research argues that Goldberg’s approach offers a compelling model for ethical and participatory documentary photography that challenges fixed narratives and empowers subjectivity.
