In the flow of Korean contemporary photography, mise-en-scène has been defined as a creative methodology that should be rejected because it undermines the essence of photography. Meanwhile, since the 1990s, as contemporary art has embraced photography, artists have actively utilized mise-en-scène in their work. Oh Heinkuhn, Kim Oksun, and Yoon Jeongmee are artists who effectively utilized the mise-en-scène strategy by controlling the model's pose, handling gaze, and composing the set. In fact, passive mise-en-scène, including poses, has also existed in documentary photography. Snaps exclude artificial poses and pursue naturalness, but there is a theatrical element in them as well. On the contrary, poses confront the theatricality of snaps by confidently revealing oneself in front of the camera. Poses are a kind of self-mise-en-scène, and can be an effective strategy to approach the model's truth.
