Abstract

The οἰκία(household, home) was the foundation of the classical Greek society which provided individual πολίτης(citizen) with the social status and supported the πόλις(city-state). Texts of ancient authors like Plato, Xenophon, Aristotle and the archaeological remains of Athenian Agora and Olynthus established during the late 5th and 4th century BC show us that the functions of the Greek οἶκος(house) were quite complex, as the structures of many buildings indicate commercial and industrial activities as well and domestic ones. A man’s οἶκος means his whole property, where he manages both his possessions and his household members. The ideal concept of the Greek family consists of two axis; the husband and wife, the master and slave, as is shown in the divisions of the γυναικωνῖτις(women’s quarter) and ἀνδρών(men’s quarter) in pastas houses, the usual type of the town houses. The role of household for the state was emphasized especially in democratic Athens where the economic power based on the household management is the essential footing of ordinary citizens in order to participate in politics. The increasing tendencies of portraying family members in the funerary stele during the later period of Periclean regime reveal the internal crisis of Athenian society and the desire of the people who wanted to stabilize their public position by means of family ties.
