본 논문은 고전기 아테네에서 아테네인의 공민적 정체성 규범 속에서 거류외인 여성의 신분변천 과정과 다양한 부류의 거류외인 여성의 삶의 형태를 살펴보는 데 있다. 거류외인 여성의 삶은 아테네 사회의 정치적 갈등관계 속에 영향을 받았으며, 아테네인이 요구하는 공민적 이데올로기 기준에 따라 오이코스와 폴리스에 통합되거나 혹은 배제되었다. 고전기 거류외인 여성의 사회적 지위는 일정하게 고정된 것이 아니라 자식의 합법성에 대한 기준에 따라 가변적으로 변천되어 왔다. 거류외인 여성은 다양한 직종에서 경제적·사회적으로 중요한 역할을 수행했다. 아테네에서 다양한 경제적 기회가 그들에게 제공되었고, 그들은 매춘부, 악기 연주자, 유모, 또한 제조업과 요식업에서 두각을 나타냈다. 그들이 내는 거류외인 세금과 특별세는 공공세입원으로 아테네 경제에 활력을 주는 재원으로 작용하였다. 궁극적으로 아테네인들은 거류외인 여성의 존재에 대해 필요하고 유용한 존재로 여긴 반면에 도시를 위협하는 위험인물로 보는 이중적인 태도를 공유한 것이다.
Abstract
This paper examines the process of transformation of status and the life forms of metic women through civic ideology in classical Athens. The life of metic woman was influenced by the political conflict in Athens and was incorporated into or excluded from the Oikos and Polis in accordance with the civil ideology standards required by the Athenians. During the classical period, the legal status of metic women was not fixed consistently and varied according to the standards of citizens. The metic women have played important economic and social roles in various professions. Various economic opportunities were offered to them in Athens, where they stood out in prostitution, music players, nurses, and also in manufacturing and alehouse.
