Abstract
Ernst’s collages, which have been described as a ‘mystery’ by many art historians, are notorious for being difficult to study in terms of its complex aspect in work process and meaning. The attitude of the researchers to the wonder of Ernst art is clearly distinguished according to the methodology: inthe case of formalism, it asserts the impossibility of interpretation, while psychoanalysis opens the room for the interpretation rather positively. The goal of this study is to draw a conclusion from the valid interpretation of Ernst’s collage by complementing the limit of psychoanalytic methodology which can lead to excessive interpretation, through formal analysis, while accommodating the positive attitudes of psychoanalysis in interpretation. When we look at existing researches, it is in the structure where formalism, which meticulously analyzes the characteristics of the work on the surface, and psychoanalysis, which actively promotes in-depth interpretation of its background complement each other. Therefore, in order to grasp the structure of Ernst collages, this study firstly organizes various categories and types of Ernst collages and compares them with other collages in the early 20th century, leading from Cubism to Dada and Surrealism, analyzing the formal character unique to Ernst collages which are tactfully disrupted in an united framework. Then, the subconscious aspect of this formal structure is exploited by actively utilizing ‘the Optical Unconscious’ theory of Rosalind Krauss, which adopted Jacques Lacan’s L schema as a visual logic. In this process, disruptive subjectivity and resistant automatist visuality that exposes repression of modernism is revealed as an explanation for the formation of perturbing structure of unity and disruption in Ernst collages. Going further, this paper unravels the detailed interpretation of Ernst collages, which was buried in the vast theory discussed by Krauss, through time and space of unconscious memory.
