Abstract
Launched in 2011, Google Arts & Culture provides users with the opportunity to access and enjoy artworks in the world’s leading art museums and collections, anywhere, anytime. It is an online platform that successfully combines high technology and art: Cyber museums deliver ultra-highresolution images of works of art. Viewers can take a much closer look at the artworks and discover amazing details that were not even visible in the museum’s original. As you zoom in on a gigapixel image, you can see clearly the texture of the canvas, the brushstrokes, and even old color cracks. Although digital images are not connected with the original physical nature of the paintings, they stimulate an imaginary sense of touch. The traditional way of looking at art objects in museums has also changed in the digital era; to zooming in on images using the mouse wheel, or by dragging the smartphone screen with the viewer’s fingers. The ultra-high-resolution images reorganize the conventional dynamics of power between the artworks and the viewer as well as they affect the existing visual perception system.
