Abstract
Nowadays as technology prevails so deeply in our lives that we can think AI might surpass human beings, thought on art and technology is urgently required. In the 1960s, Nam June Paik, who had already looked ahead to this future and showed questing after technics in the practice of art, even predicted ‘Electronic Superhighway’ in his dream of a utopian global village; however, his thinking and practices always exceed technical determinism. After perceiving the electrons in the realm of electronic music, he took them as the basis for his rediscovering the medium of television in a new way and bringing-out the material nature of the medium. His experimental TV work reveals the nature of TV technics as such by using the non-deterministic and variable properties of electrons. This experimentation can be called in a Heideggerian term, ‘Ereignis’. The singularity of Nam June Paik’s art is the presentation of the electrons, in the case of which ‘existentia’ is ‘essentia’, as readymades. And indeed, it is a shrewd criticism against the dualism of metaphysics. Either by opening a circuit of television, which is the paradigmatic closed circuit or by disturbing in-between channels between the network and the TV set, he reveals the ‘Wesen’ of technics; the technology is always more than or less than technology itself. Technics as such is double-bound with the other, the world of ‘the optical unconscious’ and it is embodied in distortion and noise. This ‘inter-space’ that he looked into, is the space of textuality freed from the limits of art based on material-support, and that space is where all new media art is springing up today.
