유아의 계층에 다른 젠더 사회화과정에 관한 질적 연구

본 연구는 계층적 차이가 나는 두 유치원의 일상생활을 통해 유아들이 젠더를 어떻게 사회화시켜 나가는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 본 연구대상은 부산시에 위치한 계층이 다른 두 사립유치원의 7세반 각 한 반씩을 선정하여 유아들의 일상생활을 관찰하였다. 관찰 결과, 두 유치원 유아들의 일상적 활동 속에 이미 젠더에 따른 구별짓기가 자리잡고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 이러한 젠더 구별짓기는 상황에 따라 다양하게 나타났다.먼저, 교사가 제공하는 환경적 차이에서 교사의 유아에 대한 기대가 다름을 알 수 있었으며 이러한 기대의 차이는 유아들의 젠더사회화에 영향을 미쳤다. 다음으로, 유아들은 또래와의 상호작용을 통해 젠더분리적 사고를 재강화시켜 나갔다. 그런데 또래와의 상호작용은 계층뿐만 아니라 활동의 종류와 활동 장소에 따라서도 젠더차이를 나타내었다.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the gender socialization processes of early childhood through a study of daily life in two preschools. Subjects in this study were 7 year-old children, of upper-middle and low-middle income status, in two suburban preschools. Participant observation was the method used in this qualitative study. The results of the study reveal that gender distinctions were made daily in the lives of the children at each of the preschools. However the features of the distinctions varied. First, the views and expectations individual teachers had with regard to early childhood influenced the way they planned and interacted in different classroom situations and, thus, the way they influenced the gender socialization processes taking place in those situations. Next, the early childhood classroom re-reinforced gender-separate ideas through peer interactions. The gender distinction on the interaction with peers is discovered not only in a stratification but also in the kind of activity and the fields of activity. From these findings, it can be generalized that the process of gender distinction stratification in early childhood embodies the influence of teacher attitudes, on the kinds of activities they plan and the way they and the students interact with each other in the early childhood classroom. And the teacher attitudes are different from the location of the kindergartens including socio-economic background of children.
