Abstract

This study was to develop a draft introduction to the 7th kindergarten curriculum notified by the Ministry of Education. First of all, it examined the necessity to reform the kindergarten curriculum, in terms of the need of the nation and the society. In addition, this study reviewed the views and research findings of early childhood profession and academic world on the current kindergarten curriculum. Also analyzed, compared, and discussed were the contents of the kindergarten curriculums, from the 1st to the 6th one. The analyzed contents were listed according to the 7th reform draft category as follows: 1) the nature and organization policy of the curriculum, 2) human values to be pursued, educational purposes and goals, 3) subject areas and class hours, 4) curriculum organization and management guidelines, 5) teaching/learning methods and evaluation. This study combined the needs of curriculum reform and results of curriculum analysis and comparison. On the basis of these findings, the direction of the kindergarten curriculum and specific guidelines of each category has been set and a draft introduction has been developed. The draft introduction is based on the idea of respect for human life and dignity as well as the love of nature. It is also intended to emphasize Korea's traditional culture, basic life habits, and creativity in all subject areas. Endeavors have been made to connect the curriculum reform to the past and present curriculums in order to help preserve the continuity and coherence of kindergarten education. That is, the draft introduction does not to put excessively high emphasis on knowledge or concept in terms of educational contents and teaching methods in the subject areas. Rather, it focuses on forming the curriculum with contents and methods related to daily life.
