유아들의 문제행동에 대한 유아교사들의 담론 분석

본 연구의 목적은 유아교육현장에서 유아들의 문제행동을 실제로 지도하고 있는 유아교사들이 유아의 어떤 행동을 문제행동으로 인식하고 있고, 문제행동을 어떻게 지도하고 있으며, 문제행동 지도와 관련하여 교사들이 느끼는 어려움이 무엇인지에 대해서 교사들의 담론을 통하여 분석함으로써 효과적인 문제행동 지도방법에 대한 시사점을 제공하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 유아교사 9명을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 교사들이 생각하는 유아의 문제행동의 유형은 타인과의 관계에서 나타나는 문제행동과 기본생활습관 형성과 관련된 문제행동으로 나타났다. 교사들이 가장 많이 지적한 유아의 문제행동은 수업에 방해가 되는 행동들이었으며, 이외에도 또래친구와의 상호작용에서 어려움을 야기하는 행동과 기본생활습관을 습득하지 못하여 야기되는 행동을 문제행동으로 규정하였다. 둘째, 교사들은 문제행동의 유형과 심각성 및 원인에 따라서 다양한 방법을 사용하여 문제행동을 지도하고 있었으며, 수업활동을 통한 지도, 대화를 통한 지도, 타임아웃과 같은 단호한 방법을 사용한 지도, 또래친구와 부모 및 동료교사의 협력을 통한 지도를 하고 있었다. 셋째, 교사들은 문제행동 개선을 위해 지속적으로 노력을 해도 유아의 행동이 개선되지 않는 경우, 문제행동을 보이는 유아로 인해 교사가 스트레스를 받거나 부정적 감정을 가지게 되는 경우, 그리고 문제행동에 대한 교사와 부모의 인식 차이가 클 때 주로 어려움을 겪는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study examines early childhood teachers’ perceptions of young children’s behavior problems, their strategies for dealing with children’s behavior problems, and the difficulties they experience in the process of doing so. In-depth interviews regarding these issues were conducted with 9 early childhood teachers. The results of the study indicate that teachers perceive inter-personal problems and problems related to lack of adequate self-help skills as the most serious problems of the early years. Most of the teachers indicated that behaviors that interfere with class activities, such as chatting with other children or wandering around during group time, were the behavior problems most often experienced in the classroom. They also mentioned inappropriate social behaviors, such as hitting friends or taking friends’ toys with force, as behavior problems in need of appropriate guiding intervention. Teachers indicated that they employ various strategies to guide children’s behavior problems. They use story books to introduce appropriate behaviors, talk with the child in trouble, use time-outs, or ask for collaboration from peers, parents, and colleague teachers. Teachers encountered various difficulties in the process of making these efforts to help children improve their behavior. They felt discouraged when children did not seem to make much progress after all their efforts. The teachers also mentioned that occasionally they feel stressed out or find themselves experiencing negative feelings toward children with behavior problems. Also distressing is that some parents refuse to work together with the teachers to improve their children’s behavior. The teachers feel that parents’ collaboration is critically important in guiding children’s behavior problems.
