Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the peer interactions in the context of shared picturebook reading activities in a small group. Children exchange their thinking and opinions in terms of the picturebooks, as one of the most familiar media of education for children, such as theme, contents, and authors' intentions during shared picturebook reading activities. The researcher conducted participant observation in order to observe peer interactions in the context of shared picturebook reading activities with four six-year-old children once a week for four months. The researcher analyzed the transcripts of video recording data of the activities, as well as research journals, the children's works, and transcripts of parents' interviews. Through the peer interactions the children connected the individual experience with the texts, constructed and understood the meanings as accepting, insisting, and imitating others' opinions. Also, the children expanded their idea through adding theirs to the others idea, experienced the conflicts and overcame it. As a result, they developed the peer interactions to the mature book discussions. This study emphasizes the important of peer interactions as exploring the pattern of the participation in the reading activities, and it shows the possibility and value of children's book discussion as re-evaluating the meanings of it.
