Abstract

This study examines gender and age differences in young children’s learning-related social skills, as well as the relationship between these skills and children’s language abilities. Subjects for this study were 243 children (81 in each of three age groups: 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds respectively), enrolled in 16 kindergartens located in D Metropolitan City. The research tools employed were the Korean Learning-Related Social Skills (K-LRSS) developed by Kwak Ah-jeong (2006), and the Korean Child Development Inventory (K-CDI) developed by Kim Jeong-mi and Shin Hee-seon (2006). These tools were used to measure the children's learning-related social skills, and their language abilities, respectively. The data were analyzed through the t-test, one-way analysis of variance, the Scheffépost hoc test, Pearson product moment correlation analysis, and the stepwise multiple regression technique. Findings of the study are first, that the young children showed no statistically meaningful gender differences in their learning-related social skills, though the female children’s average score was slightly higher than that of the male children. However, there were statistically significant age differences: The older the children, the higher the social skills. Second, there was a statistically meaningful static correlation between the children’s learning-related social skills and their language abilities. Third, compliance was found to be the most important learning-related social skill affecting the language abilities of all of the children. Assertion and mastery came in second and third, respectively. For each age group, the most important social skill was different: self-control for the 3-year-old children, compliance for the 4-year-olds, and assertion for the 5-year-olds.
