Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effects of solitary and social play on the relations between temperament and social competence in preschool children. Participants were 197 four year olds recruited from 6 preschools whose mothers completed temperament scales on them. The children's social competence was measured by teacher ratings and peer nomination. Analysis of the data shows that solitary play fully mediated between sadness and withdrawal and social play fully mediated between prosocial behavior and peer popularity. However, inhibitory control was directly linked with peer popularity.
