Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of preschool teachers’ feedback strategies on young children’s level of responses. A total of thirteen preschool teachers and their 219 children (mean age consisted of 60 months, with minimum 49 and maximum 77 months, respectively) participated in this study. With classroom observations, this study categorized preschool teachers' feedback strategies (i.e., information-seeking feedback versus cognitively demanding feedback) and young children’s responses (auxiliary-fronted responses, single-word answers, and expression of critical thinking). The result from hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the teachers’ types of feedback strategies were associated with the level of children’s responses. On the one hand, information-seeking feedback was associated with children’s single word answers after controlling for child variables (i.e., sex and age) and teacher variables (i.e., degree and years of teaching experience). On the other hand, cognitively demanding feedback was associated with children’s expression of critical thinking after controlling for the covariates. Finally, this study discussed methods which the early childhood teachers would utilize, cognitively demanding feedback strategies in the classrooms.
