Abstract
This study explored changes in infant classroom teachers’ observational competence and play support practices through collaborative action research. The research was conducted with infant teachers at k Childcare Center in J City, applying three cycles of action-introducing a curriculum-based checklist, revising observation records, and implementing a ‘play collection’ documentation method. Qualitative analysis focused on changes in teachers’ observation and support practices. Initially, teachers reported difficulties with simultaneous observation of multiple infants, determining when to intervene in play, and the efficiency of documentation. However, through the action research process, teachers adopted more flexible support strategies, focusing on individual developmental characteristics and the repetitive nature of infants’ play. The introduction of checklists, peer feedback, and the play collection approach enhanced the reliability and consistency of observation, as well as teachers’ interpretive and support skills. Notably, observation records were redefined from a mere administrative task to a key tool for understanding infant development and developing tailored support strategies. Teachers increasingly engaged in the cyclical process of observation, interpretation, and support, actively fostering child-initiated play environments. These findings suggest that collaborative action research is effective for enhancing teachers’ professional growth and enriching play-based curricula in infant classrooms. The study also highlights the need for further research on sustained implementation, application in diverse settings, and the use of digital documentation tools.
