Abstract

This mixed-methods study investigated the effects and implementation experiences of an eight-session telehealth-based parent-implemented intervention program. It incorporated Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) strategies for parents of toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Twenty-one parents of toddlers under 33 months of age were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. Quantitative analysis revealed a statistically significant increase in parenting efficacy in the intervention group, while parenting stress showed a decreasing trend but did not reach statistical significance. Qualitative findings, derived from open-ended responses and focus group interviews, were organized into four key themes: (1) changes in parental perception of their child, (2) challenges in implementing interventions, (3) program design features supporting implementation, and (4) parental needs for continued support. These findings highlight parents’ increased awareness of their child’s behaviors, greater confidence in applying intervention strategies, emotional connection with peers, and appreciation for the accessibility of the telehealth format, while also identifying time constraints and task- related burdens as barriers to consistent implementation. As the first mixed-methods study in Korea to evaluate a telehealth-based NDBI intervention, this research provides foundational evidence for both the effectiveness and feasibility of such programs and supports the future expansion of early intervention practices nationwide.
