Abstract

This paper aims to illuminate the complex and delicate relationship between economic market and democracy by a classification of a variety of schools within modern liberalism, centering around their views on the relationship between economic market and democracy. I pursue this task through an analysis of basic rights within each school. The way in which each school derives the concept of basic right and the contents of basic rights are important keys both to understanding the diversity within modern liberalism and to a successful classification of them. According to my classificatory method, from chapter 2 to chapter 4, a variety of schools within modern liberalism are analyzed and explained. The schools and thinkers dealt with in this paper are as follows: The Chicago School, The Austrian School, The Virginia School, R. Nozick and J. Hospers, A. Rand, M. Rothbard, J. Rawls, J. Habermas, R. Dworkin, R. Bellamy, C. Gould, and M. Walzer.
