Abstract

Since Descartes stated that humans converse with reason, society has changed from the God-centered Middle Ages to a human-focused society centered on the reasoning of humans. Human reasoning is based on rationalism and thus provides humans with innate rights and autonomy. These characteristics of reasoning give reason for humans to search for absolute and universal truth. Due to the Greek philosopher Socrates, who pursued absolute truth, reasoning has become a legacy in Western philosophy. After wards, scientific revolutionists such as Galileo, Newton, Kepler etc., rationalists and English empiricists further supported the spread of reasoning in philosophy. Post-modernism, which began its controversy after the mid-20thcentury, rejected the previous reasoning-based rationalism and disrupted all knowledge systems based on reasoning. It attempted to re-create mankind and history on a completely new viewpoint. Post-modernism criticized reasoning and was a form of radical irrationalism that rejected reasoning itself. During Deconstruction, epistemology criticized previous thinking systems and knowledge as well as doubting the methods to achieving knowledge. Epistemology wanted to destroy the prejudice within knowledge-gaining methods. This form of decontructionism originated with its roots related to the social revolutionary student movements that spread throughout the world in May,1968. Luc Ferry and Alain Renaut expressed ‘the 68 French Philosophies’ in the work “68 Ideologies: Contemporary Society’s Antithesis to Human-based Philosophies.” The followers of antithesis to human-based philosophies such as Liotard, Lacan, Althusser, Bourdieu, Deleuze, and Foucault, supported and encouraged student movements and formed an alliance with them. The beginning of the diversity of epistemology was through Nietzsche’s first work of The Birth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Music (1872), where Apollo and Dionysos appeared and showed an acute contradiction between reasoning and emotion. The development of Neitzsche’s contemporary criticism arose from the tendency to make the progress of ideology, which was considered to be the basic principle of contemporary society, the superiority of reasoning and the present seem like history. Nietzsche supported the inner body’s philosophy of emotions rather than rationalism, and instead of focusing on the contradiction between what is truth and what is not, he questioned human life. Thus, this study will investigate the criticisms of Nietzsche’s Greek tragedy and Socrates in Nietzsche’s first work of “The Birth of Tragedy,” which set the foundation of the modern criticism of rationalism-based philosophy.
