초록

This research explores the nature of repair organization between Korean speakers of English (KSs), applying conversation analysis (CA) as a methodology. It deals with the sequential structure of conversation. Using the framework of CA, this study shows some characteristics of KSs in repair organization and how KSs repair their talks in a sequential and interactional context. The repair organization between KSs operates in sequential and interactional context. KSs’ utterances are the continuum of self-repair and other-repair for meaning negotiation. They constantly use cut-off, word or phrase repeat repair strategies in their turns to communicate with recipients and to acquire new language. It’s noticeable that these repair strategies result in many self-initiated or other-initiated and self- completed repair. Furthermore, many KSs use the next turn repair initiators (NTRIs) as establishing a preference organization for self- completed repair. Like repair organization in ordinary conversation, KSs also rarely accomplish immediately by other, without giving self the opportunity to complete the repair. It is clearly interesting that repairs of repairs frequently occur within sequential and interactional context between KSs. Throughout repairs of repairs, KSs can acquire the meaning of word in sequential and interactional context. Furthermore, they collaboratively interact with their recipient in sequential and interactional contexts to understand and to be understood.
