미적 경험의 본성과 그 실천적 함의

오늘날 다른 어떤 개념보다도 미적 경험이라는 개념을 정의하기가 어려운 듯이 보인다. 미적 경험의 본성에 관한 논의들은 그 수렴점을 찾기 어려울 정도로 다양하게 펼쳐지고 있다. 어떤 사람들은 그것을 예술작품의 예술적 특성에 대한 반응으로 간주한다. 이를 통해서 그들은 그 경험에 대한 명료한 설명에 이르고자 한다. 또 어떤 사람들은 그것을 예술작품에 대한 인지적 과정으로 간주한다. 심지어 또 다른 어떤 사람들은 그 경험을 감각적 경험의 신비적 측면으로 간주하려고하기도 한다. 다양한 논의 자체가 문제일 수는 없다. 그렇지만 명석한 논리적 언어에 기초하여 미적 경험을 명료하게 정당화하고자 하는 시도는 우려할 만하다. 왜냐하면 그럴 경우 그 경험에 담긴 중요한 철학적 의미가 사라져버릴 수 있기 때문이다. 달리 말해서 그렇게 될 경우 우리는 인간을 이해하는 의미심장한 요소들 중 하나를 잃어버린 채 살게 된다. 18세기 미학의 성과(특히 헤르더 미학의 성과)에 따르면, 미적 경험은 ‘논리적·추론적 인식능력’이나 ‘윤리적·실천적 주체’의 활동이 아니라 ‘힘들의 자유로운 놀이’이다. 그러한 놀이로서의 그 경험은 일반적 의미의 비판(좋음/나쁨의 이분화)에 담겨져 있는 한계, 즉 규범적 차별화를 넘어서게 해준다. 더 나아가 그것은 ‘새로운 규범적 활동’이 활력 있게 전개될 수 있는 전제가 된다. 요컨대 이러한 성과를 간과한 채 미적 경험을 파악하고자 할 경우, 그러한 시도는 미적 경험은 물론이고 인간을 편협하게 이해하는 데로 나가게 될 것이다.
Abstract
It seems to be more difficult to define the concept of aesthetic experience than to do the other ones. Some people regard it as a response to the artistic features of artworks and accordingly suggest us to reach to an entirely clear explanation of it. Other people see it as a cognitive procedure of artworks. If we try to justify aesthetic experience clearly, based upon a distinct explanation, then we cannot but draw out one of the philosophical meanings implied in it and then throw out the rest into a dustbin and consequently lose a significant element of it through which we can unusually view the world and human beings. As Herder explains it, aesthetic experience is not an activity of cognitive ability or of ethical subject, but a free play of preconscious obscure powers. The experience as such a play permits us to pass over the normative discrimination concealed in any critique. Furthermore, it should become the condition upon which we perform a new normative act. In conclusion, entirely overlooking the significant results of the 18-th century aesthetics, a philosophical inquiry into aesthetic experience should lead to a narrow-minded understanding of human beings as well as aesthetic experience.
