듀이와 헤겔의 정신철학 ― 『엔치클로페디』의 ‘주관정신’을 중심으로 ―

초록

지금까지의 해석과는 달리 듀이는 1890년대 이후에도 헤겔 철학과의 관계를 단절하지 않았으며, 일관되고 지속적으로 헤겔 철학에 친밀감을 표시했다. 최근 새롭게 추가된 듀이의 「헤겔의 정신철학 강의」(1897)는 이러한 주장을 정당화하는 데 설득력 높은 근거를 제시해 준다. 이와 관련하여 「헤겔의 정신철학 강의」(1897) 중 헤겔의 『엔치클로페디』의 ‘주관정신’ 부분을 중심으로 그 내용을 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 듀이의 다윈주의 수용은 헤겔 철학과의 단절로 규정될 수 없다. 오히려 ‘인간학’에서 듀이의 심신이원론 비판과 인과관계에 관한 논의는 그의 철학적 재구성에 헤겔 철학이 여전히 중요한 역할을 했음을 보여준다. 둘째, ‘정신현상학’의 논의에 의하면 칸트에 대한 듀이의 비판은 의식을 대상과 분리된 것으로 보지 않고 주체와 객체의 통합으로 보는 헤겔적인 관점에 기반해 있다. 헤겔처럼 듀이는 자아를 ‘경험 자체의 실재적 통일’로 간주함으로써 그와 문제의식을 공유하고 있다. 셋째, ‘심리학’에서 듀이는 지성과 의지, 이론과 실천을 실행의 관점에서 통합적으로 이해하면서 헤겔 철학을 적극적으로 수용하며, 헤겔을 ‘위대한 실행주의자’로 간주한다. 이와 같은 논의를 통해 제임스의 『심리학 원리』의 영향으로 듀이가 헤겔 철학과 단절해버렸다는 종래의 해석이 일면적이며, 듀이의 제임스 철학의 수용이 헤겔 철학의 배제와 동일시될 필요가 없음을 확인할 수 있다. 더 나아가 듀이와 헤겔의 관계를 이렇게 재조명함으로써 실용주의와 독일관념론 사이에 좀더 활발한 소통의 가능성이 모색될 수 있다.

Abstract

Unlike previous interpretations Dewey didn't cut off the relationship with Hegel's thoughts after 1890s but he had the intimacy with Hegel's philosophy consistently and continuously. Many persuasive reasons to justify this claim are proposed by "Hegel's Philosophy of Spirit"(1897) that is added to Dewey's lectures newly. Dewey's lecture on the part "Der subjektive Geist" in Enzyklopädie can be reviewed like this; First, Dewey's acceptance of Darwinism should not be regarded as his disconnection from Hegel's philosophy. Rather Dewey' discussion on dualism between mind and body and causality in "Anthropology" shows that Hegel's philosophy played an important role in Dewey's reconstruction of philosophy. Second, Dewey' criticism of Kant in "Phenomenology of Spirit" is based on such a standpoint of Hegel who didn't separate consciousness from object and regarded consciousness as the unity of subject and object. Dewey agrees with Hegel's thoughts by regarding 'the self' as 'the real unity of experience itself'. Finally, in "Psychology" Dewey accepts Hegel's philosophy actively by understanding intelligence and will, theory and practice unitedly and he calls Hegel 'a great actualist'. Through this discussion, it is sure that previous interpretations is narrow-minded which claimed that Dewey cut off the relationship with Hegel's thoughts after 1890s due to the influence of W. James's The Principles of Psychology and that Dewey's acceptance of James's philosophy should not be regarded as his disconnection from Hegel's philosophy. Furthermore, we can try to find the possibility of mutual communication between Pragmatism and German Idealism by reinterpreting the relationship between Dewey and Hegel.
