듀이가 이해한 초기 헤겔 철학 - 「헤겔의 정신철학 강의」(1897)를 중심으로

초록

듀이는 시카고 대학교에서 1897년에 헤겔의 정신철학에 관해 강의를 했다. 이 강의 중 예나 시기 이전까지의 내용을 중심으로, 초기 헤겔 철학에 관한 듀이의 이해가 적절한지 여부를 검토해 볼 수 있다. 이 검토에서 다음과 같은 내용을 확인할 수 있다. 첫째, 듀이는 초기 헤겔 철학에서 ‘객관주의’를 강조하고 있다. 이에 관한 듀이의 구체적인 논의가 충분하지 않음에도 불구하고, 우리는 듀이의 ‘객관주의’에 대한 강조가 객관적 사태를 중시하는 헤겔의 관념론적 입장에 대체로 상응한다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 둘째, 초기 헤겔의 문제의식이 역사적 사회적 맥락에서 종교 비판과 관련되어 있고, 또한 이 비판이 칸트 철학에 대한 비판적 수용과 함께 한다는 듀이의 해석은 초기 헤겔 철학과 관련하여 상당히 긍정적인 평가를 받을 수 있다. 마지막으로 듀이에 의하면 초기 헤겔은 피히테의 주관주의와 셸링의 객관주의를 모두 비판하면서 ‘실행성’으로서의 통일을 제시한다. 이 점에서 듀이는 헤겔을 ‘위대한 실행주의자’라고 부르며 이 실행주의를 자신의 실용주의적 관점에서 긍정적으로 해석한다. 이상과 같은 내용들을 토대로 할 때, 주로 부정적인 관점에서 해석되어 온 듀이와 헤겔의 관계가 재검토될 수 있는 가능성이 열리며, 듀이의 실용주의와 헤겔의 사변철학 사이의 거리가 상당히 좁혀질 수 있다. 그리고 더 나아가 영미철학과 독일관념론 사이에 상호 소통의 가능성을 적극적으로 모색하는 길이 열릴 수 있다.

Abstract

Dewey lectured on Hegel's Philosophy of Spirit at the University of Chicago in 1897. It should be investigated how appropriate Dewey's understanding of Hegel's intellectual development from his birth in 1770 until the publication of the Phenomenology of Spirit in 1807 is. In this investigation we can make sure this; First, Dewey emphasized 'objectivism' in Hegel's early Philosophy. In spite of his insufficient argumentations, it is sure that Dewey's emphasis on 'objectivism' is proper to Hegel's idealism which emphasizes objective affairs. Second, Hegel's early Philosophy is associated with the criticism of religion from the historical and social context, and this criticism accompanies with a critical reception of Kant's philosophy. Dewey can receive a very positive assessment, because he also agrees on this point. Finally, According to Dewey, Hegel criticizes both Fichte's subjectivism and Schelling's objectivism and presents a unity as 'activity' in his early philosophy. In this point Dewey calls Hegel as 'a great actualist' and interprets this activism positively from his viewpoint of pragmatism. Now, when on the basis of discussions so far, it is possible to reconsider the relationship between Dewey and Hegel that has been negatively interpreted until now. And a groudless distance between Dewey's pragmatism and Hegel's idealism can be narrowed considerably. Furthermore, the possibility of mutual communication between the Anglo-American philosophy and German Idealism can be sought actively.
