로크가 1690년 그의 주저인 『인간지성론』을 정식으로 출판했을 때 철학계의 화두 가운데 하나는 회의주의였다. -신(新)아카데미 학파와 피론주의를 포함하여- 고대 회의주의에 대한 극복이야말로 로크를 포함하여 근세의 대부분의 주류 철학자들이 전념한 철학적 과제라고 할 수 있다. 그런데 데카르트가 수행한 의심들과 로크의 『인간지성론』이 아주 밀접하게 결부되어 있는데도 불구하고, 그리고 이런 철학사적 배경 위에서 숙고를 거듭한 로크의 회의주의에 대한 답변이 신중하게 평가되었어야 했음에도 『인간지성론』은 출판되자마자 푸대접을 받았고 비판의 대상이 되었다. 예컨대 로크는 『인간지성론』에서 회의주의에서 빠져나올 수 있는 길을 제시했다고 보았지만, 버클리에게는 오히려 로크가 회의주의를 인도하는 길잡이로 비춰졌다. 회의주의를 대하는 로크의 전략은 단순히 학문적으로 회의주의를 물리치는 것이 아니었다. 그는 삶에 주목하였고 우리가 관심을 갖는 일은 개연성으로 다스려도 충분하다고 보았다. 로크가 『인간지성론』에서 회의주의자들에 대응하고 있는 핵심적인 전략의 하나는 간단히 말해서, 절대적으로 확실한 지식의 확립을 시도한 것이 아니라 일종의 문제 해소의 맥락에서 프래그머티즘적 태도를 취하는 데에 있다. 로크는 우리에게 어떻게 회의주의에 이론적으로 대응할 것인가가 아니라, 삶에서 무엇이 유용한가에 집중하자고 역설하는 것이다. 로크에게는 개연성이야말로 참된 지식의 결여를 메우는 것이다. 로크는 개연성만으로도 삶과 지식에 충분하다고 간주하였다. 그러나 잘 알려져 있듯이, 회의주의에 대한 로크의 이런 프래그머티즘적인 해결책은 부각되지 못하였다. 왜냐하면 그는 철저하게 이런 유용성의 길을 걷지 아니하고, 줄곧 실재의 본성에 대한 파악에 마음을 빼앗겼기 때문이다. 요컨대 그는 언제나 표상주의에 한 다리를 걸치고 있었던 것이다. 로크가 회의주의자들이 제기한 인식론적 문제 자체의 가치를 인정하지 않고 그런 수고를 비웃었더라면 그는 이후의 철학자들에게 의해 그렇게 쉽게 도마 위에 오르지는 않았을 것이다. 실재 세계에 대한 그의 미련이 곧바로 그에게 파멸을 가지고 왔고, 동시에 회의주의에 대한 그의 프래그머티즘적 대응의 가능성을 시야에서 사라지게 만들었다.
Abstract
When Locke officially published An Essay Concerning Human Understanding in 1690, an important philosophical topic was how to overcome scepticism. Most mainstream philosophers of the early modern philosophy including Locke dedicated to solve the problem of scepticism originated from ancient new-academic school and pyrrhonism. Although Locke carefully prepared to the answer to scepticism, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding received a cold respond as soon as published and was criticized by leading philosophers of his time. For example, Berkeley considered An Essay Concerning Human Understanding as a guide to scepticism. Locke's strategy for dealing with scepticism is not simply to defeat it theoretically. He paid attention to actual life and saw the probability enough to cope with predicaments caused by life. The core answer to scepticism in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is not to establish the absolutely certain knowledge as Descartes did, but to take a pragmatic position in the context of problem solution. Locke suggested to focus on the usefulness, that is, what is useful to our life. According to Locke, the probability is to supply the defect of our knowledge and to live an happy life without terrible difficulties. As is well known, however, Locke's pragmatic response to scepticism was not taken seriously by later philosophers. Rather, his proposal degenerated into the subject of harsh criticism. The basic reason for his unfortunate destiny lies in that Locke did not become a thorough anti-representionalist. He always had kept real world itself as a source of ideas, primary qualities, resemblance between thing and idea etc. in mind. In short, lingering affection to representaionalism resulted in his failure to scepticism. Locke’s philosophy showed why phyrronism could emerge as a philosophical invincible enemy.
