Abstract

Although Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi stood in the middle of the german classical philosophy, his philosophy meanwhile received little attention. The aim of this paper is to look into his philosophy from the point of view of his reason critique and to introduce his effects on Hegel’s philosophy. Jacobi divides reason into demonstrative reason and reason as mind(Geist). According to him the former concludes inevitably with fatalism because of his focus on the necessary connection between condition and the conditioned. On the other hand reason as mind ist both the ontological basis of the individuals in the world and principle of realistic recognition. Owing to the mind the individual can sensibly as well as reasonably be intuited immediately as a whole itself. According to Jacobi Kant devoted his attention only to the former reason and thus arrived at agnostic nihilism of the transcendental object and subject. On the other side it is belief and revelation that guarantees for Jacobi the real correspondence of recognition. The origin of our recognition of object can be nothing but the object itself before our eyes. But since this fact cannot be strictly demonstrated, it cannot but be believed. This belief is supported objectively by the divine reason which is revealed as the spiritual(geistige) structure of object itself. Hegel reformed and developed the mind-notion of Jacobi through his discussion of love and life up to the proper concept of philosophy. Above all on the basis of the realistic epistemology he conceived his own philosophical system with the principle of mind. However it is accomplished not by belief but by insight into the ontological immanence of mind and by mediation of recognitive abilities that mind subjectively has.
