Abstract

In relation to “college writing courses primarily intended for freshmen, focusing on learning both academic writing and writing about oneself,” this study provides an overview of the philosophical current of posthumanism. The core of this examination is as follows: in the age of posthuman philosophy, where the boundary between humans and machines is increasingly blurred and the flexible overcoming of anthropocentrism is regarded as an inevitable task, college writing courses need to be newly explored from the perspectives of diversity and complexity. In Braidotti’s terms, the identity of such writing should be sought from the standpoint of transversal subjectivity. In this context, the paper proposes the following points. First, the “writing of self-overcoming” discussed by Nietzsche in Thus Spoke Zarathustra may contribute to outlining a new model for learning to write about oneself. Second, the writing practice inspired by Actor–Network Theory (ANT) provides the foundation for an alternative model of academic writing education.
