감정의 규범성 정립을 위한 일고찰: 감정 논의의 개념적 도구로서 이모티브 이론

본고는 감정의 인식 및 표출에서 중요한 매개체가 되는 ‘언어’에 주목하고 그중에서도 언어적 방식으로 형성되는 감정 진술(statements of emotion)의 특성과 유형, 효과 등을 설명하려고 시도한 윌리엄 레디(William M. Reddy)의 이모티브 이론을 검토한다. 레디는 인류학 및 역사학자의 입장에서 문화상대주의와 보편주의 딜레마에 대해 오랫동안 고민해오면서 이 난제를 오스틴의 언어행위이론을 통해 극복하고자 시도한다. 사회제도 및 규범을 다루는 법학이 특히 감정을 연구대상으로 삼을 때, 그 사회의 심층 도덕이나 문화의 영향을 반드시 고려할 수밖에 없으며, 이 과정에서 보편적 가치를 지향하는 법학과 문화상대주의의 딜레마라는 문제가 동일하게 제기될 수 있다. 이런 측면에서 레디의 이론적 시도를 검토하는 것은 유용할 수 있다. 레디는 감정표현을 ‘이모티브(emotive)’라고 명명하고, 이모티브의 개념과 속성을 밝히면서 감정의 언어적 표현에 대한 이론화를 시도한다. 이러한 시도는 이모티브가 세상을 설명하는 동시에 변화시키는 ‘구성적 속성’과 ‘수행적 속성’ 모두를 가진다는 점을 밝히면서 오스틴의 ‘수행문(performative)’과 차별화시키는 전략을 사용한다. ‘일어나는 상태’, 즉 현상으로서 감정이 특히 언어현상 속에서 형성되고 변화하고 재형성되는 일련의 메커니즘이라는 점에서, 과연 감정에 대한 바람직한 접근법은 무엇이 되어야 하는가를 모색해본다.
Abstract
This paper focuses on ‘language’, which is an important instrument in the recognition and expression of emotions, and attempts to explain the characteristics, types, and effects of statements of emotion formed in a linguistic manner. As an anthropologist and historian, Reddy has been thinking about the dilemma of cultural relativism and universalism for a long time, and he attempts to overcome this difficult problem through Austin’s theory of speech acts. When jurisprudence, which deals with social systems and norms, especially takes emotion as the object of study, it is inevitable to consider the influence of the society’s deep morals and culture, and in this process, the problem of the dilemma of cultural relativism is the same as that of jurisprudence that pursues universal values. In this respect, it may be useful to examine Reddy’s theoretical attempts. Reddy names emotional expression ‘emotive’ and attempts to theorize the verbal expression of emotion by clarifying the concept and properties of emotional expression. This attempt uses a strategy to differentiate it from Austin’s ‘performative’ by revealing that the emotive has both ‘constructive and performative properties’ that explain and change the world at the same time. Considering that emotions as an ‘occurring state’, that is, as a phenomenon, are a series of mechanisms that are formed, changed, and reshaped, especially in linguistic phenomena, we explore what should be a desirable approach to emotions.
