이 글은 식민지 시대의 소설가이자 민족주의자 이광수의 윤리 정치의 실패에 대해 숙고해보고자 하는 취지에서 씌어졌다. 통상적으로 이광수의 실패는 주인담론의 윤리에 의해 단죄되거나, 식민지적 상황의 특수성 탓이라는 방식으로 이해되곤 한다. 이 글에서는 이러한 두 가지 방식의 접근으로부터 거리를 유지하면서, 칸트의 윤리적 실패를 통해 이광수의 실패를 읽고자 했다. 그것은 근대성의 윤리가 도달한 한계 지점에서 이광수의 실패를 바라보고자 하는 것이며, 또한 윤리성에 대한 외부적 성찰이 아니라 우리 자신의 윤리적 허약성에 대한 성찰이기도 하다. 『순수이성비판』에서 행해진 칸트의 두 개의 요청은 주인담론과 결별할 수밖에 없었던 근대성의 윤리가 그로 인해 봉착하게 되는 난관을 보여주는 한 상징이며, 이광수의 경우는 이를 좀 더 예각적이고 그로테스크한 모습으로 보여준다. 이광수는 주인기표의 자리에 민족을 대체해넣었고 그럼으로써 민족 없는 민족주의자라는 기이한 입장에 처하게 된다. 그것은 기본적으로 그의 윤리정치의 실패로 인한 것이지만, 동시에 절대선의 형식주의를 보여주는 것으로서 근대성의 윤리적 허약성을 노정하는 것이기도 하다.
Abstract
This paper was written on the purpose of thinking about the failure of Yi kwangsu's ethico-politics. Generally speaking, it has been regarded as a betrayal of the nation on the respect of Lacanian master's discourse, or as the unavoidable result of the colonized situation. Apart from both perspectives, I tried to read his failure on the eyes of that of Kant's ethics. It means trying to watch his failure under the limitation of modern ethics and regarding it not as his individual failure but as a weakness of modern ethics itself. The two postulates in The Critique of Practical Reason are the symbol showing us the barrier in front of the ethics of modernity separated from the ethics of master's discourse. We can find a acutely distorted form of it in Yi Kwangsu's morality. He put the nation into the place of the master-signifier. Eventually he was found as an uncanny character, a nationalist without a nation. It is basicaly the result of the failure of his ethico-politics but shows also the formalism of the absolute good and the weakness of modern ethics.
