Abstract

This paper analyzes the socio-historical image in poetry according to its inherent characteristics and substantiates the analysis through concrete examples. An image introduces into the poem the entire situation it represents. A situation is the world as it appears to the subject, and the image is what connects the subject to the world. Therefore, the world-image that presents the situation to the subject contains a socio-historical context. The paper identifies four main characteristics of the socio-historical image: survivance, overdetermination, anachronism, and hauntology. First, survivance refers to the phenomenon in which past images are superimposed upon present ones, overlapping the voice of the individual with that of the community. Second, overdetermination is when a single image, shaped by multiple temporal dimensions, subjective, and socio-economic factors, undergoes condensation and displacement to generate multilayered meanings. Third, anachronism denotes the meeting of images from different eras within a single horizon—bringing together images of origin, distant past, recent past, present, near future, and far future in one field. Fourth, hauntology refers to the presence of the other that does not belong to the present moment of the situation, thereby raising the problem of the other and ethics within poetics. Socio-historical images arise in the process by which personal perception intertwines with communal history in production, circulation, and consumption. In this process, they border upon both symbol and allegory. Poetics and ethics converge through the medium of the socio-historical image, and poetry, in turn, will invoke an ethics of coexistence with the other.
