Abstract
This study investigated the effect of wire diameter on the occlusal force by measuring the occlusal force when varied wire diameter was applied. The difference of the occlusal force was also determined by measuring the occlusal force with silicone and without a block. The typodont used in this study had the first premolar extracted, the periodontal ligament was imitated with silicone impression materials and .018˝ metal brackets were passively bonded. Strain gauges were attached to the palatal surface of the upper left second premolar, first molar, and second molar. A Universal Testing Machine was used to apply a compressive force of 200 N and occlusal force was measured. Next, after a 5 mm thick silicon block was placed on the upper left second premolar, first molar and second molar, the same investigation was repeated. Each test was conducted ten times. The occlusal force of the upper second premolar was increased and that of the upper first molar and second molar was decreased on occlusion as the wire diameter was increased. The sum of the occlusal forces was decreased as the wire diameter was increased. The occlusal force of the most posterior teeth was the largest when biting the silicon block. In conclusion, the splinting effect of the occlusal force towards the anterior teeth was demonstrated on occlusion as the wire diameter was increased, and the use of the large wire should be considered discreetly. The occlusal force of the most posterior teeth was the largest when biting the silicon block due to the hinge movement of the mandible.
