조동일의 『한국소설의 이론』 검토

1977년에 간행된 조동일의 <한국소설의 이론>은 현재 한국고전문학 연구에 큰 영향을 미치고 있는 중요한 저서이다. 그는 문학의 장르를 넷으로 나누고, 또 작자와 창작시기를 알 수 없는 고소설을 시대순으로 정리했는데, 이와 같은 그의 연구 성과는 현재 중등학교 교과서에도 그대로 실려 있다. 그러나 조동일의 이 책에는 많은 문제가 있다. 이를 크게 두 가지로 나눠보면, 하나는 잘못된 사실을 바탕으로 자신의 연구를 구성했다는 점이고, 다른 하나는 자신이 설정한 연구 방향에 맞도록 자료를 왜곡했다는 점이다. 그 대표적인 예가 <홍길동전>이다. 조동일은 <홍길동전>의 작자를 허균이라고 보았으므로, 허균이 죽은 해인 1618년 이전에 <홍길동전>이 나왔다고 말했다. 그리고 <홍길동전>의 내용이나 형식을 기준으로 소설의 유형도 나누고, 소설의 연대기도 작성했다. 그러나 <홍길동전>의 작자는 허균이 아니고, 창작시기는 17세기가 아닌 19세기 초엽이다. 조동일이 설정한 기본 전제가 이처럼 잘못되었으므로, <한국소설의 이론>에서 그가 주장하는 내용 대부분은 한국소설의 실상과는 다르다. <한국소설의 이론>의 잘못된 내용은 수정하거나 보완해서 쓸 수 있는 정도가 아니므로, 이 책의 내용을 중등학교에서 가르쳐서는 안 될 것이다. 그리고 한국문학 연구자들도 이 책의 내용을 무비판적으로 따라서는 안 된다.
Abstract
Dong Il Cho's Hangugsoseol-ui ilon (Theory of Korean Novel) published in 1977 is an important book that has a great influence on the study of Korean classical literature. His research results, which divided the literary genres into four and arranged old novels in chronological order, are also present in the textbooks of secondary schools. However, there are many problems in Cho's research, which can be broadly divided into two types. One is that he constructed his research based on false facts, and the other is that he distorted his data to fit the research direction he had set. A typical example is Hong Gil-dong Jeon(The Story of Hong Gil-dong.) Since Dong-il Cho regarded the author of Hong Gil-dong Jeon as Heo Gyun, he said that Hong Gil-dong Jeon was published before 1618, the year Heo Gyun died. He also divided the types of novels based on the content and form of Hong Gil-dong Jeon and wrote a chronicle of the novel. However, the author of Hong Gil-dong Jeon is not Gyun Heo, and the creation period is in the early 19th century, not the 17th century. Since the basic premise set by Cho Dong-il is so wrong, most of the content he claims in Theory of Korean Novel is different from the reality of Korean novels. The wrong content of Theories of Korean Novel is not enough to be corrected or supplemented, so the contents of this book should not be taught in secondary schools. And even Korean literature researchers should not uncritically follow the book's
