본 연구는 18세기 음악에서 이국주의의 한 측면으로서 ‘중국 취향’에 관한 고찰이다. 대항해 시대 이후 유럽에서는 본토 밖의 다른 세계에 대해 지속적인 관심을 가졌고, 여행자들과 탐험가들, 그리고 선교사들의 기록은 이들 세계에 관한 방대한 정보들을 제공하였다. 동방의 거대한 나라 중국은 이들에게 하나의 미지의 세계이자 호기심의 대상이었다. 무역을 통하여 유입된 중국의 차와 도자기 등의 진기한 물건들은 유럽 세계에 신선한 반향을 불러일으켰고, 중국식 정원이나 건축 양식이 유럽의 조경 예술에 반영되었다. 이러한 중국 취미의 유행은 ‘쉬누아즈리’(Chinoiserie)라고 하는 경향을 탄생시켰고, 음악 특히 오페라의 대본에서도 중국과 관련된 이야기들이 흥미로운 소재가 되었다. 이에, 중국을 소재로 하거나 중국인이 등장하는 작품, 《중국인》(Le Cinesi)과 《중국 영웅》(L'eroe Cinese) 및 《무인도》(L'isola disabitata)를 중심으로 당시 음악극에 묘사된 중국이라는 이방 세계의 이미지와 그 음악적 표현방식을 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 통해 18세기 유럽에서의 이국주의(exoticism)의 한 단면을 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study examines the ‘imaginary China’ represented in the eighteenth century western operas. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw the flood of reports by travelers, missionaries and traders about China, and vogue for the Chinese things like tea, porcelain, and chinese garden and interior design, so called 'Chinoiserie' in Europe. The ‘Chinoiserie’ in 18th century decorative art influenced on the exotic setting of the opera. The opera librettists adopted the Chinese literatures and stories - like Metastasio's L'eroe Cinese‘(The Chinese Hero). This paper considered especially opera L’eroe Cinese(composed by Sacchini, Hasse, Galuppi), Le Cinesi(composed by Gluck), and the libretto L'isola disabitata by Carlo Goldoni. Descriptions of Chinese characters and stage design in these opera librettos reveal the European perspectives on the 'China'. Each composer devised musical expressions for exotic color and dramatic effect in the convention of contemporary opera writing.
