Abstract
The paper presents octatonic towers consisting of atonal tetrachords conceived as an extension of Douthett and Steinbach' towers for 7th chords. I have generalized the voice leading shown in Douthett and Steinbach' octatonic towers to see if tetrachordal set classes might be applied and to build the towers for other tetrachordal set classes. Siciliano's toggling voice leading has to be revised for tetrachordal set classes so that we can construct the octatonic towers for atonal tetrachords. My new model is useful in that two different tetrachordal set classes can be unified in one tower and it has provided insight into the analysis of atonal repertoire. Thus I have used this new construct to analyze several passages from Scriabin's Piano Sonata No. 9.
