Abstract
In the conventional isographic relations between K-nets which are defined by David Lewin, the transpositions appear to be more significant than inversions since only one or more common interval classes are required to produce the isographies. There are, however, passages or pieces which show the inversional context clearly in the musical surface. In these, inversional relations are necessary both to interpret the musical context and also to draw isography. Therefore, this paper examines the conventional isographies which can be organized and interpreted using twelve inversional zones and introduces new axial isographies which can provide insight into the nature of inversion as reflected in inversionally designed works. Three analyses, of sections from Schoenberg’s Drei Klavierstücke, op.11, no.2, Scriabin’s Vers La Flamme, op.72, and a short passage of Webern’s Streichquartett 1905, each introduces a new type of axial isography for tetrachords.
