본 연구는 외국인 초급 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 한국어 학습 배경, 학습 동기 및 학습 요구를 분석하고, 이를 통해 교환학생 초급 한국어 학습자를 위한 한국어 교육 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울 소재 C대학교와 M대학교에서 외국인 교환학생을 대상으로 개설된 초급 한국어 교과목을 수강하고 있는 학습자 105명을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 설문 조사 결과, 교환학생들은 주로 한국 문화에 대한 관심을 동기로 한국어 학습을 시작한 것으로 나타났으며, 학습의 주요 목적은 한국 생활 적응과 한국 친구와의 소통, K-Culture 콘텐츠의 이해였다. 또한, 한국어 수업 시수가 부족하고, 문화 중심의 수업과 실생활 회화 중심의 학습을 요구하는 경향이 강했다. 학습자들은 개인적 흥미를 바탕으로 한국어를 학습하고 있으며, 진로나 직업적 목적보다는 문화적 관심이 주된 동기임을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 교환학생들의 한국어 학습 동기와 요구를 반영하여, 실용적이고 문화적인 요소를 포함한 교육과정 개발의 필요성을 제안하였다.
Abstract
This study investigates the Korean language learning backgrounds, motivations, and needs of beginner-level foreign exchange students, aiming to propose effective pedagogical strategies tailored to this learner group. A survey was administered to 105 exchange students enrolled in beginner Korean language courses at C University and M University in Seoul. Findings reveal that the majority of participants initiated Korean language study driven by interest in Korean culture. Their primary learning goals included adapting to life in Korea, engaging in communication with Korean peers, and comprehending K-Culture content. Moreover, respondents reported dissatisfaction with the limited instructional hours and expressed a strong preference for culturally integrated, practical, and conversation-focused instruction. The data further indicate that learners’ motivations are predominantly personal rather than academic or professional. These results underscore the need for a Korean language curriculum designed specifically for exchange students, emphasizing practical communicative competence alongside cultural literacy to better align with learners’ unique motivations and requirements.
