흔히 자유학예와 자유교육은 손과 신체를 사용하는 노동과 대비하여 노동으로부터 면제된 자유인에게 걸맞은 것으로 여겨진다. 그래서 자유학예와 자유교육은 직업교육과 대비되는 것으로 이해된다. 그러나 자유교육이 직업적 실용성과 무관한 것이라는 생각은 자유인과 노예라는 계급 구분을 전제로 한 개념이며, 자유학예가 손과 신체를 사용하지 않는 순수한 학문에 해당한다는 인식 역시 그러한 배경에서 유래한 것이다. 계급 구분이 사라져 어느 누구도 노동으로부터 자유롭지 않은 오늘날 그러한 구분을 고집하는 것은 다소 경직된 교조적 태도라고 할 수 있다. 오히려 역사적 사례들을 살펴보면, 사회적 효용성을 결여한 자유학예와 자유교육은 없었다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 손과 신체를 사용한다는 이유로 자유학예의 지위를 얻지 못했던 회화와 조각, 그리고 실험과학과 같은 분야는 그 사회적 효용성이 인정되자 자유학예로 분류되기 시작했다는 것을 알 수 있다. 해방 후 오랜 세월 동안 한국의 대학에서는 자유교육의 이념을 계승한 교양교육이 제대로 이루어졌다고 보기 어려우며, 여전히 전공 교육의 뒷전에서 맴돌고 있다. 인공지능의 획기적 발전이 사회 구조의 변화를 예고하는 시대에 교양교육은 그 사회적 효용성과 관련한 새로운 문제의식에 따라 재편될 필요가 있다.
Abstract
iberal arts and liberal education are often seen as fitting for free persons who are exempt from labor, standing in contrast to manual labor involving the hands and body. Thus, they are understood as being distinct from vocational education. However, the notion that liberal education is unrelated to practical vocational value is based on the class division between free men and slaves. The perception that liberal arts are pure academic pursuits involving no physical activity also stems from the same background. In modern society, where class division no longer exists and no one is free from labor, adhering to such a distinction seems rigid and dogmatic. In fact, history shows that liberal arts and liberal education have always had social utility. We can see that fields like painting, sculpture, and experimental science―originally regarded as servile arts due to their reliance on manual activity―were eventually classified as liberal arts once their social value was recognized. For many decades since liberation, general education in the spirit of liberal education has never been properly implemented in Korean universities. In the age of AI, general education needs to be reorganized in accordance with a renewed awareness regarding its social utility.
