이 논문은 『난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공』의 여성 인물에 주목하고자 한다. 『난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공』은 노동자 계급 인물의 의식화 과정을 담고 있는 작품이다. 주로 남성 인물들의 의식화 과정이 중심을 이루고는 있지만 여성 인물에 초점화된 작품들을 살펴볼 때 그들만의 독특한 의식과 과정이 드러난다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 『난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공』의 여성 인물들의 발화와 행위를 꼼꼼히 살펴보며 그것들이 이 작품의 주제의식과 어떻게 관계를 맺고 있는지를 확인하고자 한다. 이러한 작업을 통해 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』의 의미 구조가 좀 더 폭넓은 맥락 하에 구성될 수 있을 것이라고 생각된다. 논문의 첫 번째 장은 『난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공』의 대표적인 여성 인물인 삼남매의 어머니와 신애, 영희의 발화를 중심으로 살펴본다. 이들의 언어는 노동 담론의 장 안에서 크게 기능하지 못하거나 겉도는 느낌을 준다. 그러나 이들은 분명히 노동에 관여하거나 노동을 의식하는 인물들이므로 이들의 발화가 어떠한 맥락에서 이루어지고 그것이 어떤 의미를 가지는지를 살펴보도록 할 것이다. 그리고 이들 인물들이 서사 속에서 수행하는 행위를 분석하여 이들 행위의 이면에서 작동하는 실천의 영역을 밝혀내고자 한다. 결론적으로 이와 같은 여성 인물들의 발화와 행위가 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』이 꿈꾸는 사랑의 법 아래에서 살아가는 세상에 어떻게 기여하는지를 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to focus on the female characters in The Dwarf Who Shot a Small Ball by Cho Se-hui. The novel primarily deals with the process of class consciousness among working-class characters, in which the awakening and struggle of male figures have often taken center stage. However, when the narrative is reexamined through the lens of its female characters, a distinct form of awareness and praxis emerges. Accordingly, this study closely analyzes the speech and actions of the female characters in The Dwarf to explore how they are related to the novel’s thematic consciousness. Through this examination, the paper seeks to reconstruct the work’s meaning structure within a broader social and discursive context. First of all this paper focuses on the utterances of the representative female figures—the mother of the three siblings, Shinae, and Younghee. Their language appears to function marginally or remain peripheral within the discourse of labor. Nevertheless, they are clearly engaged in labor and conscious of its conditions. This study therefore examines the contexts in which their speech occurs and the meanings it conveys. Furthermore, by analyzing their actions within the narrative, the paper seeks to reveal the sphere of practice operating beneath the surface of those actions. In conclusion, this paper investigates how the speech and actions of these female characters contribute to the vision of a world governed by the “law of love” that The Dwarf Who Shot a Small Ball aspires to depict.
