Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the necessity for media literacy education in music as well as how to strengthen its role, especially given the need to reconceptualize literacy in a changing media environment and the growing importance of media literacy in education. With the evolution of modern media, musicians and teenagers now employ it to find connections, explore new types of music, work jointly on musical activities, as well as produce and distribute related media contents. Given this environment, music teachers meed to consider the benefits of incorporating digital media into the curricula, and the importance of media literacy education. In order to explore these areas, this study investigated cases of ‘Project Smart Art’ and an online music platform ‘indaba music’ and made the following observations. First, the concept of media literacy is defined in terms of social skills, as well as cultural and personal competencies, and thus, a systematic approach is needed to media literacy education. Second, media literacy education in music should be used to the development of‘communication competency’ and ‘information processing competency,’ which are promoted in the current 2015 national curriculum. Third, evolving digital technology affects music, particularly, how popular music is produced and distributed, and plays a significant role in people’s social interactions and shared understanding of music through media. Fourth, in music education, alternative and voluntary learning channels need to be explored, including cyber-space, community activities and informal learning. Lastly, this study discovered the educational value of media literacy education as students actively participated and endeavored to spread participatory cultures and diversify in musical education. Given these findings, extensive theoretical research needs to be conducted concerning media literacy education in music. In addition, best practices should be explored and employed to expand the boundaries of music education.
