Abstract

This study aims to identify the structural changes in North Korean music education discourse by analyzing 333 articles on music education published by North Korean teacher training universities between 2012 and 2024. The research data were drawn from metadata provided by The Education Newspaper and The 2.16 Art Education Publishing House archived in the North Korea Data Center. After refining the dataset by article and year, descriptive statistics and chi-square (χ2) tests were employed for analysis. The results show that, first, during the early period of Kim Jong-un’s rule (2012–2014), policy and ideology formed the central framework of the discourse, while the teacher image discourse functioned as a means of implementing and disseminating it. Second, in the stabilization and expansion phase (2015–2019), teaching methods and instructional design emerged as core discourses, accompanied by a gradual reinforcement of evaluation and performance-based practice. Third, after the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2024), discourses on digital media expanded rapidly, interacting with existing pillars such as policy and ideology, teacher image, and instructional design. While performance and practice re-emerged with the return of in-person activities, music theory and analysis and psychological-cognitive discourses remained relatively peripheral throughout the period. These findings indicate that North Korean music education discourse under Kim Jong-un has been reorganized around an interconnected structure of policy (political logic), competency (teacher norm), method (pedagogical technique), and media (means of delivery). This study holds academic significance in that it systematically demonstrates, through empirical data analysis, the structural transformation of North Korean music education discourse—previously addressed only at a descriptive level. Furthermore, it provides a foundational framework for comparative dialogue between South and North Korean music education discourses and serves as a basis for future research on North Korean educational practices.
