Abstract

This study applied Charmaz’s (2006) constructing grounded theory to explore, in depth, how undergraduates admitted through an undeclared-major track explore and choose their academic majors and what psychological and social experiences they undergo during that process. Twenty-four students from seven universities were recruited through theoretical sampling and participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Applying the constant comparative method, the study generated 71 initial codes, 16 focused codes, and seven theoretical codes; the causal and contextual relationships among these codes were then analyzed to develop a “Model of Major Exploration Experiences of Undeclared-Major Students.” The resulting categories were: (1) postponement of major selection, (2) paradoxes and contradictions within the undeclared-major track, (3) psychological turmoil arising from uncertainty, (4) shifts and expansions in perceptions of majors, (5) assessment of major fit, (6) influences of ecological contexts, and (7) meaning-making of the major exploration experience. This study highlights the significance of focusing on the major exploration experiences of undergraduate students—key stakeholders in the undeclared major policy—who have remained on the margins of policy discussions Based on the findings, the study offers several recommendations for consideration.
