Abstract

The purpose of this study is to exploring the predictors of college students' career decisions using automated machine learning. For this purpose, the study utilized the 6th wave data of the KEEP2 survey and employed the AutoML and SHAP methods for analysis. The results of deriving 20 key predictor variables indicate that students' career decision-making is primarily explained by three factor groups. First, field experience (field internships, exam preparation, certifications, taking relevant courses, etc.); second, self-exploration and value recognition (favorite activities, value assessment, what is important in life); and third, school satisfaction and support (department satisfaction, professor counseling, learning programs, and experience with innovative teaching methods). Additionally, health status, leisure and exercise habits, and family background factors showed relatively low contribution but played a supplementary role in supporting career decisions. SHAP analysis similarly revealed that field experience (internships, exam preparation, certifications), self-exploration and value recognition (favorite activities, activity value assessment), and school support factors (department satisfaction, professor counseling experience) were key determinants of students' career decisions. Conversely, participation in basic learning programs or taking certain career-related liberal arts courses was found to be associated with career indecision, likely due to specific group characteristics or self-selection effects. Personal background factors (gender, income, residence, etc.) and lifestyle factors (health, exercise, leisure time) showed relatively low contribution but were confirmed to play a supplementary role. No significant gender-based interaction effects were observed. The findings suggest that the role of the university is more influential than individual or family background in career decision-making. University education for career decision-making should be structured and operated as a three-pronged approach: foundational education, major-specific education, and advanced education focused on enhancing practical relevance.
